This
course will begin as a one block offering that will be expanded if there
is sufficient interest. You may register for it as a part-time student,
or you may take it as an elective. Within the Faculty of Piping it will
be considered a piping elective and will be available at no extra cost.
In this course students will have an opportunity to learn how to become
better players. The setting up and maintenance of the instrument will
be a major focus as most pipers will have had an opportunity to work
specifically on technique within the Highland Pipe classes.
Smallpipe players are encouraged to enroll
in the regular piping program for the purposes of expanding repertoire
and improving fingerwork. Specifically, Smallpipe players will have
their instruments examined and evaluated as to the quality of the reeds,
how they are set up and how to improve their maintenance.
The class will provide a forum for the instructor(s)
and students to share information about resources and innovations. Beyond
this, depending on interest, ability level and available time some suggested
topics are: The use of the Smallpipe for accompanying other instruments
- how does this differ from being the principal instrument in a group?
Do
you really need other drones and chanters? Are some tunes better than
others for the Smallpipe? Instructors are open to suggestions on other
topics.
