Bodhrán | Percussion

Programme

Bodhrán Beginner

For those who have very little or no experience (less than one year) playing the Irish drum. This class will explain how to hold the stick and strike the drum, how to play some basic reel and jig rhythms, and it will introduce some advanced techniques and rhythms. Cillian will introduce you to basic rhythm structures of the reel, jig, waltz & hornpipe.

Bodhrán Intermediate/Advanced

For those who are past the basic level, these classes introduce advanced beatings and tricks. Intermediate and advanced classes will focus on new techniques, ornaments, fine listening skills how to create your own original grooves.

Participants should bring along their bodhrán and favourite tipper(s) (plus whatever irrigation equipment they might need). If they don't have a bodhrán, a hard-cover book about the size of a high school binder will do.

That said, you're going to learn how to play quietly too and for that matter, when NOT to play! By week's end, you'll have accompanied vocalists, fiddles, bagpipes, and dancers.

ANNOUNCING CELTFEST TRAD BAND: Assuming enough participants in the Celtic Music school this year, CeltFest plans to again present a comprehensive music school featuring many disciplines, which, though, taught separately, come together during CeltFest week to form a special ensemble---TRAD BAND. This is open to all full-time students registered in Celtic Music School instrumental subjects, and will take place in the afternoon as part of the day program's schedule.
